Whether your just researching general information or need to be more specific about a particular word or phrase for a safety document etc. then we hope this helps.
What is an Abbreviation?
An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. It consists of a group of letters usually taken from the beginning of that word or phrase. However an abbreviation might also leave out a combination of letters throughout the word, usually the joining letters such as vowels. If using an abbreviation always be certain to reference it in full at the beginning of a document or in a glossary.
Example: (The word abbreviation can itself be abbreviated to read either: abbr., abbrv. or abbrev.)
What is an Acronym?
An acronym describes a word composed entirely of the first letters of other words, so that the collective forms and is then in itself pronounced as a word. Acronyms can be composed of all capital letters or one capital and smaller letters. Acronyms are often used and taught during various training programmes as an aide-mémoire to help a trainee remember specific headings and topics.
Example: (WAIT – Work at height, Access equipment, Information, Toolkit) What is HSE WAIT? »
What is an Initialism?
Just like an acronym, initialisms describe a word that is composed entirely of the first letters of other words. However, an initialism cannot usually be pronounced as a recognisable word but is instead sounded out using each individual letter. Many leading organisations have used initialisms to form names which have become very well known in their own right, such as the BBC and HSE.
Examples: (PPE – Personal Protective Equipment, or PFPE – Personal Fall Protection Equipment)
